Please send us your memories of Buckeye ( Lake ) Ocean

If it wasn't for Buckeye Lake and Alexander's Landing, my family would have had no vacations at all.  We could not afford to go away BUT started renting a place at Alexander's for one week and that was the biggest and best vacation any kid could ever want.  How I looked forward to that every summer.  There was no freeway leading from Columbus so it seemed like a really long trip.  We used their row boat and it was more fun than the big Cruisers others had.  I had no brothers or sisters but was always allowed to bring a friend and she was so thankful.

As years passed my parents retired and were able to purchase a little house across from Cranberry Marsh (at that time it was known as the Bounds Addition.  They spent 14 wonderful years there and my children were exposed to the wonderful Buckeye Lake.  My father died and I moved my mother in with me and that was 18 years ago (sold that house for $33,000 ! ! ! ! )
In 2002 my husband passed away and my mother is still with me (93 yrs. old).  In Oct. 2003 I moved mother and myself back to the lake down on the Thornport Channel.

I truly feel like I just moved "back home" and another generation (my grandchildren) are going to love it just like I did.

When I was a child, my family would always spend time at Buckeye Lake. In those days we rented a cottage and we left behind the telephone and television. In the early days we would spend a day at the amusement park. We swam at Fairfield Beach, caught our share of fish and of course spent time at Weldon's, where my brother would always get a factory special. Going in last week, the old factory special sign brought back the cherished memories of times spent at the lake. Our last outing as a family was quite some time ago when we stayed at Willow Point at Alexander's Landing. When my brother and sister and mother and I talk about our lake days, it always brings a feeling of peace and calm. My father is no longer alive, but when I stroll the sidewalks or boat along the banks or go fishing, Dad is there with me in a very special way. He was the first person I ever heard call the lake Buckeye Ocean and we used to tease him about it. Buckeye Lake will always hold special memories for me.

My mother was an entertainer at Buckeye Lake in the 30s and 40s. I have a short film clip from there in 1937. Her name was Mitzi Joyce she had worked there as a single and in the Munson Copton Trio. She always talked about how great it used to be. My Cousin also lived there John Roshon, and some of the islands and beaches are named after my family Keller. Would be interested in seeing more of your site.

I lived on North Bank before it became the place to live. Paid $42,500 for it. which was a lot back then, sold it for $99.000. Now you buy for $99,000 and tear it down. My cottage was called Alleigro. I would like to see people start renaming their homes the original names. I think that would be neat, you know carry on the history.

In the 60's I worked at the Crystal Pool for the infamous Mrs. Fletcher and Pappy. She was a very tough lady with a good heart. Also Myrtle Speaks who was also associated with the pool lived on Grandstaff Road, the road next to the roller coaster. I worked at the checkin part of the pool where you checked in your wallet and clothes while you were swimming. I also cleaned the shower area, not one of the more fun parts of the job. I grew up at Buckeye Lake during the 50's and 60's. I have lots of memories. My dad who now lives at Thornville was a volunteer fireman during the fire at the hotel that burned down, can not remembe what year that was. Both of my parents were associated with the fire department during that time.
